Prospective Prison Ministry volunteers often have questions. Among them are:
1. Will I be assigned a ministry in the prisons with which I am uncomfortable?
No, all ministry volunteers will progress as time passes. Women will always minister in pairs.
2. Will I be required to minister every week?
No, all ministry volunteer schedules will be shared with others in order to make it work for each. If a volunteer has a conflict (wedding, funeral, holiday, etc.), others will be available to fill in.
3. What if I am afraid I won't know what do to?
Our Program Celebration of the Word with Eucharist is pre-done for each week of the year. It includes the reflection on the reading. Everything is laid out in this brochure. There is a cabinet in the Sacristy with all the materials needd for volunteers to go and successfully do their minitry.
4. Am I expected to do consultation with the prisoners?
Definitely not. That is a separate ministry. One does either one or the other...not both. The incarcerated are coming to you to listen to the word of God and receive communion; this is a very prayerful moment for them.
If you or anyone you know has a calling to this ministry, reach out to Fr. Callistus directly at [email protected]. He is happy to discuss the ministry with you.
